It’s been a tough year for Mary, but it seems she has a guardian angel…
Mary met her sponsor, Yinka, for the first time at our Valentine’s Brunch, which held at Foodies, Lekki, this year. They had time to chat and get to know more about each other, and Mary shared about some of her challenges at school, which her sponsor later discussed with us. She didn’t have a Math’s teacher, and also needed extra notebooks and lessons. Before the COVID-19 lockdown, we were able to resolve these issues.
Later on, when we checked on Mary, her mother informed us that their rent was due, and they hoped to move elsewhere, as their current location suffers from very bad flood damage. However, they didn’t have the money required to secure a new place. We decided to reach out to her sponsor, and Yinka was willing to assist. She raised the amount estimated, which was more than double the family’s current annual rent. We asked Mary’s mother to proceed with her search for a new place.
However, there were no places available within her price range. We also assisted in the search, but were stomped too. Mary’s mother later clarified that she didn’t really want to move and would be happy to stay at her current place if something could be done about the flooding. So, we reached out to the landlord and proposed to fix up the place as payment for her rent. After some negotiations, the landlord agreed, and we were able to negotiate two years rent for the cost of the renovation!
Mary and her mom are happy with their improved accommodation, which was recently painted anew, just in time for Christmas! We fixed the roof, raised the floor level, and added tiles so as to keep the water out of their home. The family are so thankful to Mary’s sponsor, Yinka, who surpassed expectations, and continues to go over and beyond for them.
Mary sat for her Junior WAEC in August and is rounding off with her end of term exams at the small private school she attends locally. Mary is a very bright student, who wants to be a surgeon when she grows up. Actually, her dream is to own her own hospital! And with a good education, anything is possible!
This Christmas, we will be sharing provisions with Mary and her family, and the other FLA Kids we work with. Not all our kids have sponsors, so at this time of the year, we always appreciate your generosity. Whatever you are able to contribute will go a long way towards helping us to spread the Christmas cheer, and empower more children for a fairer life!

Mary’s story is really inspiring…
Naomi and her mother are still staying with a friend, after the destruction of her home earlier this year. We would really love to raise the funds to help them find a new place they can call home – just in time for Christmas. Can you help?
